Stoupa and Kardamyli (also spelt Kardamili) are two of the best-known villages on the west coast of the Greek Mani region, roughly 10 to 15 minutes apart by car. We have stayed in Stoupa several times and visited Kardamyli on day trips, so have a good idea of the differences between the two villages.

Our verdict

Stay in Stoupa and visit Kardamyli for a day, by car or on the bus.

Stoupa Kardamyli
Our experience Multiple stays Day trips
Best for Beach days and an easy, relaxed holiday Lunch, browsing the shops, a wander round the village
Families, couples, walkers Suits all three Suits all three
Without a car Works well, with everything in walking distance Works well

Both places give you enough to do without travelling beyond them. We would simply choose Stoupa as a base for the holiday.

Stoupa: beaches, lunch and an easy rhythm

A typical day for us is time on the beach, a bite to eat, a rest in the afternoon, then out for a meal in the evening. Some days we explore a bit more. Stoupa has two sandy beaches: the main beach in the village and quieter Kalogria, a short walk north.

If you have a car, Pantazi and Foneas are both easy trips. If you don’t, you can walk or cycle the coastal path to Agios Nikolaos, about 4km away.

Kardamyli: a good day out

We have only been to Kardamyli for the day, and it is a lovely one. We go for lunch and a wander round the village. It is very good for shopping, with shops selling gifts, clothes, artwork and ceramics that are well worth a browse. There is a small, regular farmers’ market and art gallery just off the main road.

Kardamyli also host several annual events, such as live music, jazz and literature.

However, if you’re a sun worshipper then be aware that, unlike the sandy offerings at Stoupa, there is only one small pebbly beach at Kardamyli, with another slightly further north.

Getting to Kardamyli from Stoupa

  • By car: a short drive up the coast.
  • By taxi: about €12 from Stoupa (as of May 2026). Our taxi guide has the numbers.
  • By bus: KTEL buses run between Stoupa and Kardamyli. Going by the timetable we had in May 2026, the bus leaves Stoupa at about 08:20 and reaches Kardamyli around ten minutes later, and there are return buses from Kardamyli at about 14:00 and 20:00. These times are estimates and they change without notice, so check with KTEL first. Everything we know is in our Stoupa bus guide.

Do you need a car?

No, not for either place. You can enjoy a holiday in Stoupa or Kardamyli without one. If you come back more than once, though, a car gives you the freedom to explore more remote villages in the mountains. For flights, transfers and driving, see how to get to Stoupa and Kalamata Airport.
