Foneas Beach

Foneas Beach is a “hidden gem” on the rugged Mani Peninsula between Stoupa and Kardamili. Visitors can park on the side of the road nearby and walk down the narrow rocky path to the beach.

The beach has white pebbles and crystal-clear, turquoise waters. Its most distinctive characteristic is a massive rock formation that divides the beach into two sections and provides natural shade, a welcome feature on sunny days. This imposing rock is also a popular spot for adventurous visitors to climb and dive from.

The beach’s name, Foneas, translates to “Killer” in Greek. According to popular legend, it gets this ominous name from a pirate who was shipwrecked there. The story goes that he took refuge in a cave and, to survive, robbed and killed passers-by.

Given its pebble-stone shore, visitors to the beach are advised to wear swimming shoes for comfort.
